Malkia Strikers: Date with destiny for Kenya as Japan await in final group fixture at Paris Olympics

Kenya’s Malkia Strikers will have to write a new chapter in their history if they have to avoid an early elimination from Paris Olympics as they take on Japan on Saturday.

Kenya’s Malkia Strikers face an uphill task to avoid an early elimination from the Paris 2024 Olympics as they take on Japan in their final group match.

Malkia Strikers have lost back-to-back group stage games to Brazil and Poland, both by straight sets, but still have hopes of staying on course if they can manage to beat the Japanese.

Kenya lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, and 25-15) to Poland on Wednesday but they need to change that trajectory as they are bottom of Group B without points.

With the top two from each group and the two best third-place finishers sealing a place in the quarter-final, it does not look good for Japheth Munala’s side.

Brazil and Poland have already secured the top two slots from Group B while China and Serbia are favourites in Group A. Group C has Italy and Turkey in the top two positions.

The United States, who have three points in Pool A, can move further up the standings with victory in their next match, given China and Serbia have five and four points respectively, while the Netherlands have one point in Pool C.

It leaves pointless Kenya and Japan in a tough position as each of them will need victory and hope for some favours elsewhere to sneak into the quarter-final.

History does not favour 20th ranked Kenya against Japan, ranked seventh, but they will need to write a new chapter if they have to avoid another group stage elimination.

It is the fourth Olympics for Kenya with the other three ending with group stage exits and they are yet to win a set at the Games.

Those are the grim statistics that Munala and his charges are up against but a change of strategy will be needed if they have to right those wrongs.
