The defending champions got off to a brilliant start in their retention attempt in Nyeri as the 2024/25 season kicked-off.

Kenya Prisons, the defending champions of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Men’s League, are setting their sights on achieving a long-anticipated hat-trick of consecutive titles.

Despite their decorated history, the Wardens are yet to secure three back-to-back league titles, a record team captain Jairus Kipkosgei believes they are poised to accomplish this season.

With the KVF league in full swing, Kipkosgei remains optimistic that the 2024/25 season will be the one that cements their legacy in Kenya’s volleyball history.

“Our goal for the season is to retain the league title and achieve that elusive hat-trick,” he told KVF.

“We’ve never managed three consecutive wins before, but this could be the season to change that.”

The team’s recent performances in Nyeri as the 2024/25 season kicked-off on Thursday, October 31 seem to validate Kipkosgei’s optimism.

In their latest fixtures, Kenya Prisons faced formidable opponents, squaring off against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) at the intense Kamukunji Grounds.

The Wardens’ resilience was put to the test in both matches, starting with a closely fought 3-1 victory over KPA, with set scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, and 25-23.

This win was hard-won, with Prisons narrowly edging out KPA in a match that saw momentum swings and intense rallies.

Their second match of the weekend proved even more grueling as Kenya Prisons clashed with KDF in a five-set thriller.

After losing the first set 22-25, the Wardens bounced back to claim the second and third sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-14.

However, KDF did not relent, pushing the match to a fifth set after a narrow 23-25 win in the fourth.

It was only in the decisive fifth set that Prisons managed to secure victory, finishing 15-11.

“We anticipated a tough game against KPA, and they didn’t disappoint,” Kipkosgei reflected.

“This weekend in Nyeri, we faced tough matches, but thankfully, we emerged victorious. Being the team to beat, every opponent brings their best against us, treating each match like a Cup final. So as champions, we constantly have to elevate our performance.”

The Wardens currently top the men's league with 11 points.
