Billie Jean King Cup: Angella Okutoyi reveals what gave her an edge over Burundian star Sada Nahimana

Angella Okutoyi has disclosed what gave her the advantage over Burundian star, Sada Nahimana, who is ranked among some of the top tennis players in Africa.

African champion Angella Okutoyi is not leaving anything to chance at the ongoing Billie Jean King Cup as the main focus remains on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Okutoyi was in a class of her own, thrashing Burundi’s Sada Nahimana, one of the top-ranked tennis players in Africa according to the official rankings.

The match was surely expected to be a tough show since Okutoyi is also among the top players in the rankings and the duo would definitely be out to show the world who is king.

Okutoyi had the pressure to deliver on home soil and she did not disappoint by showcasing her zeal. The youngster managed to stun the Burundian sensation 6-4,6-4 to walk away with the crown.

“Before going to the match, I was mentally ready and I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task. Sada is a very competitive player. I had to mentally and physically be ready.

“On the court, I really had to play my game and I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task because Sada is a really competitive and good player and I didn’t want to think much about what she was going to do.

“I was also trying to hold on my serve and break her’s because that’s what worked pretty well and to stay in the points more and be energetic,” Okutoyi said during a post-match interview.

Okutoyi disclosed that she was not under any pressure to deliver following Cynthia Cheruto’s win in the first game of the day. She added that she was happy from the

“No, not at all…I was happy that she had won the first game because it kind of reduced my pressure but I had to win for the team. I enjoyed watching Cheruto and watch her play, it gave me a lot of motivation,” Okutoyi said.

Speaking about her key takeout from playing the Burundian opponent, Okutoyi insisted that there were no major lessons learnt. "Today, not really...maybe I picked up a lesson on people who love slicing a lot, that's one area. Nothing much," she said.
