Super Eagles 2-2 Saudi Arabia
The Super Eagles of Nigeria recorded a 2-2 draw against the Green Falcons of Saudi Arabia on Friday, October 13, 2023.
There were no goals in the first half with few chances for both sides.
To start the second half, Saudi Arabia were in control and found the breakthrough when Salman Al-Faraj scored in the 60th minute.
Super Eagles Head Coach Jose Peseiro rang the changes introducing Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, and Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Saudi Arabia were not in front of long as Abdulelah Al-Amri scored an own goal and the Super Eagles were level.
In the 81st minute, Iheanacho converted a trademark goal to put the Super Eagles in front.
In Stoppage time, Saudi Arabia found the equalizer through Mohamed Kanno as the game ended in a draw.
Reactions as Uzoho compared to Onana
The game at the Portimao Stadium in Portugal produced massive reactions on social media.
Nigerian football fans were not pleased with the performance of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.
The draw came after the Super Eagles were placed in Group A of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire next year.
The Super Eagles were grouped alongside hosts Cote D'Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea.
According to some fans, Uzoho is not the first-choice goalkeeper while others insisted he should not be on the team to the AFCON.
They blame Uzoho for the mistake that resulted in the first goal for Saudi Arabia and directly impacted the result of the game.
According to Super Eagles of Nigeria fans, Uzoho will hold the team back from winning the AFCON, and they compared him to Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is struggling for Premier League giants Manchester United.
Reactions to Iheanacho
Nigerian football fans lamented the injury that resulted in the removal of Napoli's top striker Victor Osimhen.
They, however, credited Leicester City forward Iheanacho for coming on as a substitute to change the game.
The Super Eagles will now aim to bounce back when they take on Mozambique in their next fixture scheduled for Monday, October 16, 2023.
