Bruno Labbadia named Super Eagles coach
The NFF has chosen former Germany international Labbadia following weeks of conjecture that included contenders including two-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion Herve Renard and former Sweden manager Janne Andersson.
According to an official announcement, the 58-year-old will assume leadership of the Super Eagles immediately.
Labaddia is the sixth German manager of the senior national team of Nigeria in history and was most recently in charge of Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.
The Nigerian national team will be coached by the former manager of Bayer Leverkusen when they play Rwanda on September 10 and Benin on September 7.
The 2025 AFCON qualification series is scheduled to begin in December 2025 with those matches.
Reactions to Bruno Labbadia as Super Eagles coach
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) presented Labbadia as an experienced coach in their statement.
Starting his career in 2003 with Darmstadt 98 for three years before moving to Greuther Fürth, Bayer Leverkusen, and Hamburger SV for a year each.
He then spent another three seasons with VfB Stuttgart but had one-year stops at Hamburger SV, VfL Wolfsburg, Hertha BSC, and VfB Stuttgart.
Social media was a buzz with the appointment of Labbadia with mixed reactions from Nigerian football fans.
Most were satisfied that the Super Eagles finally have a coach ahead of their upcoming games.
However, the majority of the reactions were negative questioning the competence of Labbadia to lead the team.
His experience of over a decade was called into question with his losing record highlighted.
After losing the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final to Ivory Coast, Nigerians believe the track of of Labbadia not winning a trophy does not bode well for the team.
