We all belong to Allah - Hakimi says as over 1000 people reportedly die in Morocco Earthquake

Achraf Hakimi has reacted on social media to the tragic news of the Earthquake that has recently rocked Morocco with the death toll reportedly rising to thousands.

Achraf Hakimi has taken to social media to react over the recent tragedy that broke out in his home country earlier today.

Morocco was hit with an earthquake leading to the unfortunate loss of hundreds.

According to a report from BBC, more than 1,000 people have died in the quake, which struck at 11pm WAT on Friday, September 8, 2023.

The main tectonic driver is the collision between the plates that carry the European and African continents.

It is said that "Violent" tremors were felt in several areas of the country from Casablanca to Marrakesh, where many buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged.

The country’s royal palace said the armed forces would deploy rescue teams to provide affected areas with clean drinking water, food supplies, tents and blankets.

Many of the victims are believed to be in hard-to-reach mountain areas.

Following news of the tragedy in the North African country, Paris Saint Germain wingback Achraf Hakimi has taken to social media to send out a message of support to his country people.

The 24-year-old Moroccan World Cup star took to his Instagram account with more than 19.7 million followers to post a message that read: 

“We are living a difficult time for all of our fellow citizens. It's time we pull together to save as many lives as possible. My condolences to all those who have lost a loved one.

“We are living in difficult times and our thoughts are all with the injured and the families of the victims. Let's all cooperate and contribute to save the wounded by donating blood. We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return”

Morocco's interior ministry revealed the earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant, adding that more than 1,200 had been injured.

According to a report from BBC, some buildings in Marrakesh have collapsed and the damage is particularly severe in parts of the Medina, a Unesco World Heritage site.

Dust could also be seen surrounding the minaret of the historic Kutubiyya mosque, a major tourist attraction near the old city's main square, while the historic Jemaa el Fnaa mosque partly collapsed.

CNN reports that Morocco will observe three days of mourning following the deadly earthquake that struck the country, the Royal Palace said Saturday.

Flags will be flown at half-staff on all public buildings, according to a statement issued by the palace.

Hakimi is currently with the Moroccan national team as they prepare to play in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Atlas Lions have already seen their 2023 AFCON qualifying match against Liberia on Saturday night postponed in the wake of the latest tragedy.

Morocco are now expected to play Burkina Faso in a friendly match on Tuesday, September 12.
