The Americans became the sixth and final side to qualify for the tournament set to take place in Nairobi in July.

The United States of America is the final team to have qualified for this year’s World Rugby U20 Trophy set to take place in Nairobi in July.

The USA become the sixth and final team to seal their place following an 82-35 aggregate win over Canada across a two-legged play-off.

USA won the first leg of the Rugby Americas North regional qualifier 43-21 in South Carolina on Tuesday and followed it up with a 39-14 victory in the second and final encounter on Saturday, to go through and join Scotland, Uruguay, and Zimbabwe in Pool A.

The make-up of Pool B had long since been decided with hosts Kenya, Hong Kong China, Samoa, and Spain grouped together.

As the host nation, Kenya’s participation was guaranteed, while Scotland’s involvement has come about through their relegation from the World Rugby U20 Championship when it was last held in 2019.

Chipu, as Kenya are known, are already in training for the competition set to take place at Nyayo Stadium from July 15-30 with coach Curtis Olago having named a provisional squad of 39 for the event.

“The team has been preparing well as we work towards next month’s tournament. We have retained a core of the squad that was selected for the Barthes U20 Trophy,” team manager Peter Mutai said last week, as per KRU Media.

“There are six new call-ups to the wider training squad that will be whittled down to the final squad of 28 ahead of the tournament. The six are Ian Nyandusi, Spencer Tayghan, Anthony Okoyo, Rodgers Omanyi, Nickson Shevei, and Victor Wabuto,” he added.

This will be the third appearance for Kenya in the competition having hosted the 2009 edition before qualifying for the 2019 tournament in Brazil.

Kenya qualified for the 2023 edition by virtue of being hosts, after losing the Bathers Trophy final 28-7 to Zimbabwe at a packed Nyayo Stadium in April.

Spain were the first team to qualify for the tournament through the regional qualifiers back in November, beating Samoa, Uruguay, and Hong Kong China in booking their place in the tournament line-up by a matter of weeks.
