Harlequin are now in the driving seat to clinch the overall circuit title in the final leg set to take place in Nakuru next weekend.
Kenya Harlequins are now in pole position to clinch the overall SportPesa 7s circuit trophy in 2024 after they downed KCB 15-12 in a dramatic Driftwood 7s final in Mombasa on Sunday afternoon.
Harlequins, who have reached at least the semi-finals of every leg that has been held this season, had already clinched the Ingo 7s title in Kakamega, and also reached the final of the Christie 7s on home soil during the opening leg that took place in July.
KCB drew first blood with a well converted try early on in the game and added another unconverted one some few moments later to put them in full control at 12-0 up.
Quins would however equalize with two excellent tries of their own in equal measure to set up for a very intriguing end to the game.
In the end, it would be a penalty that would decide the final outcome of the game, a rarty in sevens rugby, after a Quins player was infringed with the Ngong Road-based outfit trying to maul their way into the KCB ‘22, which was well taken to give them a 15-12 win.
This now means Quins will top seeds in Nakuru, and they will be out to claim the overall title should they win that trophy, now standing on 97 points, with Kabras second on 90 points. KCB remain third on 97 points now.
KCB had overcome perennial rivals and tournament defending champions Kabras Sugar in the semi 15-0 to book their spot in the main cup final, while Harlequin battled to another having beat Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad.
