The national men's rugby 15s side, Kenya Simbas finally managed to register their first win of the ongoing Currie Cup First Division, beating Border Bulldogs 30-26 in a very tight encounter played at the Cape Peninsula grounds on Saturday.
This becomes the first win for the Simbas on South African soil this season and comes against an opponent that they beat last season which marked their only away victory.
Simbas drew first blood when Timothy Mmasi sucked in his defenders before passing the ball to Joel Inzuga who landed the first try of the match which Dukisa converted to give them a 7-0 lead.
Bulldogs equalized just moments later, as they pounced on a loose Simbas pass before landing a try which was well converted. Their leveler would not last though, as they were penalized for being offside and Dukisa put Simbas 10-7 ahead before the break.
Simbas continued to mount pressure on the bulldogs right after the break, and they capitalized on an Infringement by the opponents, before Dukisa extended their lead with a second penalty kick.
Bulldogs just could not stop making the errors, and they soon gave away another penalty as they were also reduced to 14 men, with the Kenyans now in full control at 27-7 up.
Simbas appeared to get complacent, allowing Border Bulldogs to start mounting a comeback. After a rolling maul, they landed a try and their resulting conversion sliced the uprights.
The Bulldogs were at it again with the errors and conceded yet another penalty. Dukisa did not disappoint yet again, and the scoreboard now read 30-14 in Simbas’ favor.
Bulldogs then reduced the gap with an unconverted try before landing their fourth try which was converted this time round.
The win will be a welcome confidence booster for Jerome Paarwater’s side, having failed to register a win in any of their first three games in South Africa. Simbas are taking part in the challenge as part of the preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
