Kenya saw Namibia’s Windhoek Draught Welwitschias leapfrog them from seventh spot following their no show for the last two matches against Valke and SWD Eagles
Kenya Simbas have finished eighth in the Currie Cup First Division Mzansi Challenge despite missing the last two matches owing to financial constraints.
Simbas were expected to be in South Africa last weekend for meetings with Valke and SWD Eagles but did not travel as a financially-struggling Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) could not cater for the logistics, opting out of the two games.
As a consequence, Namibia’s Windhoek Draught Welwitschias leapfrogged Kenya from seventh spot following their victory over Eastern Province on Saturday with Jerome Paarwater’s men slipping to eighth on the 10-team log on 12 points, having won two matches.
Simbas have witnessed a turbulent time in the tournament, missing the first two games against Boland Cavaliers and Leopards, before losing the first two to Eastern Province Elephants and San Clemente Rhinos.
They would win their third match, a 30-26 victory against Boarder Bulldogs, but Namibia’s Welwitschias handed them a 35-28 loss before a 48-7 thrashing of Zimbabwe Goshawks in Nakuru on May 20.
Paarwater’s men were expected to build onto the victory but failed to travel to South Africa, surrendering the initiative as a result.
Valke finished top on 36 points from eight wins and a draw, same as Boland Kavaliers, who won seven and drew two, while SWD Eagles sealed third place on 36 points courtesy of seven wins and a draw.
Namibia’s Welwitschias collected five points after beating Eastern Province 47-29 in their final Mzansi Challenge match at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Saturday, taking their tally to 17 points from three wins and six losses.
In total, Simbas missed four matches from the event and it is not known yet if there will be any consequences, having initially been threatened to be thrown out of the tournament after missing their first two.
