The two Kenya Sevens players have been recognised for their brilliant performance in the final leg despite the team’s relegation
Kenya Sevens duo of Kevin Wekesa and Brian Tanga have been named in the London Sevens dream team following their brilliant performance in the final leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series last weekend.
While it has been all doom and gloom following Kenya’s relegation from the World Series, there was some good news from London that should give fans optimism that there is a budding talent that can turn things around in the near future.
Wekesa had a brilliant outing in the English capital where he scored six tries, a hat-trick in Kenya’s opening match in the four-team relegation playoff against Canada when Shujaa won 29-24.
He would cross over the line three times again in the second match against Tonga, contributing greatly to Shujaa’s 38-26 victory, as they headed to the third match against Uruguay with high hopes of retaining their core status. He, however, sustained an injury in the match, which they lost 14-10, exiting the pitch just before halftime.
Tanga, meanwhile, scored a brilliant try against Tonga, having played a pivotal role in the opening tie.
The two were among six players chosen in the London Sevens Dream Team alongside Augustin Fraga and Rodrigo Isgro, both of Argentina, who helped the Pumas to an unlikely Cup win. Akuila Rokolisoa and Regan Ware, both from New Zealand and Manueli Maisamoa of Fiji were the other players selected.
Kenya were relegated to the less fancied Challenger Series following a 12-7 loss to Canada in the relegation playoff final, losing the top-flight status they have enjoyed since the 2004-05 season.
