RUGBY SAFARI 7s: Shujaa coast through day one unscathed as KCB falter

Shujaa were dominant all through Saturday as day one of the Safari Sevens tournament got underway.

Kenya Sevens proved to be kings of the Safaris Sevens after day one, brushing aside South Africa All-Stars, Uganda, and Tropic Sevens, virtually leaving them with just one more foot in the semi-finals.

Their display against Tropic Sevens epitomized their superiority on the day, clearly trying to conserve their energy ahead of day two.

Their first two successfully converted tries were a classic case of tearing easily through the defence before practically walking the ball towards the try line through John Okoth and co-captain Vincent Onyala.

Patrick Odongo would then run down the right wing like a knife through butter to put Shuja 21 to the good,

Although Tropics momentarily bounced back with a converted try before the break, Nigel Amasita and Brian Mutugi would seal the tie beyond doubt.

Against Uganda, an efficient Kenya were the first to land the first blow in the contest and it came from Nygel Amaitsa who easily touched down at the corner after Kenya took full advantage with Uganda reduced to six men.

While the conversion attempt was unsuccessful, Kenya prised open the Uganda defense straight from the restart as they retained possession before another carbon copy move saw the diminutive Samuel Asati locate his KCB teammate Vincent Onyala on the far left.

Despite having the little matter of a Ugandan marker up ahead, Onyala trusted his speed and got the job done as he touched at the corner to extend Kenya’s lead to 10-0 following another missed conversion.

A rare loose pass from the Kenyans who were deep in their territory gave the Ugandans a lifeline when they landed an unconverted try just before the break to halve the deficit at half time.

Shujaa would however open a twelve-point lead after a mix of silky handling and brute force left the Ugandans on the floor as John Okoth touched down the team’s third try.

There was no missing this time round for Tony Omondi as he nailed the conversion to bring the score to a full-time result of 17-5.

In their first match, they completely obliterated the South Africa All-Stars 36-0.

Lionesses brush teams aside.

In the women’s category, both the Lionessess looked comfortable and dominant throughout the day one action, with all of them getting three wins on the bounce.

Lionesses brushed aside Tuks 52 -10, before narrowly seeing out Uganda 12-5 in what was a very tightly contested encounter.

They however, obliterated their Kenyan counterparts 31-7, although the Cubs did beat Tuks 32-0
