On Thursday, Walukuba Barbarian wrote to Makerere Impis requesting that their game be postponed due to financial constraints.
Clubs in the Nile Special Rugby Premier League will receive the final disbursement of the money from sponsors Nile Breweries on Friday.
Sources have revealed to Pulse Sports that the sponsor and Uganda Rugby Union will have 100m shared amongst the ten top-flight sides, with each getting 10m.
This will be the second payment to clubs in the 2023 season; 10m was paid out to each club earlier in February.
Mainstream and social media in Uganda have been awash with cries by some clubs suggesting that playing the league is becoming a more expensive venture than they can afford.
On Thursday, Walukuba Barbarian wrote to Makerere Impis requesting that their game be postponed due to financial constraints.
“We have failed to raise financial requirements to host you at the Abel Dhaira Memorial Stadium this weekend. We, therefore, request this game to be postponed to an agreed date,” part of the letter from Walukuba to Impis read.
Walukuba is scheduled to host the Makerere outfit in Jinja on Saturday.
Rams is the other said faced with financial challenges, and the club informed their weekend’s opponents Kobs of their dilemma on Thursday.
Kobs was the first to ask for a rescheduling of their fixture, citing an inability to field a team for the game.
As if that was a blessing in disguise, Rams received that with open arms before revealing their situation.
“As Rams, we are financially down and having no funds to carry on with games. Even facilitating training has failed. We agree to your request,” Rams responded.
Kobs have already petitioned URU to revise its decision regarding the Heathens-Kobs clash that ended in chaos at Kyadondo two weeks ago.
This website has established that delays in disbursing money to clubs is an issue beyond URU, who have to wait until the sponsor releases it to them.
It remains to be seen whether the clubs will actually get the money on Friday and whether there will be any postponements of games scheduled for this weekend.
