Kenya 7s coach Kevin Wambua has provided an insight on how his charges fared at the Paris 2024 Olympic games.

Kenya 7s coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua has offered a post-morterm of the Olympics campaign that was for his charges after securing a ninth place finish at the tournament.

Kenya played five matches in Paris. They lost all their three pool matches against Argentina, Australia and Samoa, but bounced back with wins against Uruguay and Samoa again to finish in ninth place out of 12.

Speaking to Olympics Kenya following their campaign, Wambua offered his insight into the things that went right and wrong for the side at the global showdown.

“I am quite happy with the boys’ performances considering three quarters of the squad were first-time Olympians,” Wambua opined.

“It was a pre-season before the pre-season as far as the HSBC circuit goes.

“Olympics is the absolute most elite competition in the sport. Our first game was against defending series champions Argentina, then Australia, a top three team in the series rankings.

“Coming from the challenger for the circuit, I think the boys did well. There is room for improvement but they showed their capabilities. For me, I am just happy. We have to continue trusting the process.”

Wambua has blamed the final Pool B loss to Samoa as down to the players losing their mental state with the quater-finals on the line on Thursday, which led to them receiving two unnecessary yellow cards that disadvantaged them that afternoon.

“A loss to Samoa was down to nerves and indiscipline but we were able to get the opportunity to recollect ourselves and the boys played with much more composure.”

Wambua praised their improved display during the rematch that took place on Saturday evening for the ninth-place spot.

“Our attack was great and defense even better and it was a good way to finish the Olympics.”

Wambua has also praised the collective effort brought forward, and the example his co-captains Tony Omondi and Vincent Onyala brought to the team which helped them finish their campaign with two wins.

“Two back-to-back wins is not an easy feat for a group of young players. The leadership was top notch in terms of the captains who have experience in the team leading the young team of players.

“They put their best foot forward and we look forward to the future.”
