Amaitsa the hero as Shujaa get fortunate to beat Tonga to qualify for the quaterfinals, while Kenya Lionesses' perfect start is brought to an end by Belgium.

Kenya Sevens labored to overcome a tough Tonga 17-14 in their third and final match of Pool A on day two of the Uruguay leg of the HSBC Challenger Series.

John Okoth opened the scoring for Shujaa after a neat exchange involving center Nygel Amaitsa, which was well converted by Tony Omondi.

Omondi would score the second try after being assisted by Amaitsa again after Lamec Ambetsa had ran with the ball down the right, but he could not convert it.

Siouasi Huihui would land a coveted try to reduce the deficit for Tonga and make it 12-7 to the Kenyans good heading into the break.

Sioni Tupou would put Tonga into the lead with a well converted try right after the break, but it did not deter Kenya from fighting to get ahead, and Amaitsa would land his first try of the game having provided the first two.

In the end, Kenya would see out the game albeit in tense circumstances.

Lionesses fall short to Belgium

Earlier, Kenya Lionesses' perfect start to Urugay was brought to an end thanks to a 21-5 loss to Belgium at the same venue.

Cecil Blondiau landed Belgium’s first converted try of the afternoon after a lapse in the Kenya Lionesses’ defence.

Naomi Amuguni would land Kenya’s try moments later, but it was not converted, and they went trailing 5-7 at the break.

Belgium were yellow carded at the beginning of the second half, but it did not stop them from going in front again, with Blondiau netting her second successfully converted try of the game, before Hannie Swiers put the nail in Kenya’s coffin with another well converted try.
