Kenya Lionesses coach Dennis Mwanja has expressed happiness at his side’s grit after sealing a semi-final place at the ongoing Challenger Series

Kenya Lionesses boss Dennis Mwanja has expressed his pride at how his players showed a lot of character as they managed to beat Czechia to make the semi-finals of the ongoing Dubai Challenger Series.

The Lionesses beat Czechia 22-12 on Saturday to follow up on their showing at the pool stage, which they managed to get through despite missing out on top spot by two points to the same opponents.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's semi-final against Argentina, Mwanja revealed happiness with how his girls are evolving at the tournament, something he says will only make them stronger.

“A playoff game is a different game from a knock out game,” Mwanja said.

“The girls understood the assignment, no more mistakes, just have to win. Yesterday [Friday] we lost by two points but when we looked at it surgically, we realised that we did not take two conversions.

“So today (Saturday), we decided we had to take care of all of the small errors we made.

“Just making it to the semis is very critical for us. We have ticked the box for one of our targets and also the girls were very motivated to play against a Czechia side that was relying on history to come and beat us.

“We were depleted having ten players, Cristabel being on suspension and also Sharon, our first choice winger, being injured.

“Nevertheless, (I am happy with) the character shown by the girls and I am proud of how they rose to the occasion and played to the last minute.”

Like Shujaa, the Lionesses are seeking promotion to the top of World Women’s Seven Series next year.
