“It was a culmination of many things. It was not like I just woke up and said I do not want to play anymore. It was just listening to the body, for example, warmups. Getting the body up and running was more difficult as the years went by.

Wekesa admitted that it had been difficult to strike a balance between rugby and mechanical engineering studies, but given he has now completed them ahead of a year set to be monumental for his international career, it will help a great deal.
“The relegation was tough. It was tough to take in. Processing it was tough, but I do not think it was a reason contributing to my decision ‘cause I would love to see Kenya part of the series and be part of that.
“When beginning to play, we were a core team, so it would only be good if I was part of taking the team back to our core status, but relegation was not part of the reason I decided to retire.”
