Abukuse believes Shujaa have what it takes to beat South Africa at the upcoming Rugby Africa 7s.

Kenya Sevens’ first rising outside centre Dennis Abukuse has challenged his teammates not to fear the threat of South Africa should the sides meet at the Rugby Africa 7s that will take place in Harare, Zimbabwe on 16th and 17th  September 2023.

Abukuse was named in Kevin Wambua’s provisional 35-man squad on Wednesday which is set to hit camp in preparation for the tournament at a date to be announced later.

Kenya have their work cut out to overcome South Africa if they are to stand a chance of sealing qualification to their third straight Olympic Games, given the Blitzboks are the only stumbling block standing in their way of a tournament they have otherwise tended to dominate.

“Did we not beat South Africa in one of the tournaments in the series last year? We did! I believe we can beat them again,” Abukuse told Pulse Sports.

“As long as everyone is willing to play that game, give their 100 percent and avoid mistakes, we can qualify for the Olympics!”

Meanwhile, Abukuse believes that the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) should place an emphasis on investing in developmental rugby in order to lay sustainable foundations for the future of the sport if it is to ever return to the highest level.

“We should borrow a leaf from those core rugby countries if they have age group teams that develop young players, we should also have junior teams. If they have national academies, we should also have a national academy,” the 24-year-old said.

“Given the team, we have, if we had started growing from the academy level - the Morans in this case - our transition to the national team would have been smooth.

“Sometimes, we sit down and ask ourselves what Kenya did to win that famous Singapore Sevens Series in 2016.

“The side had experienced players like Oscar Ouma, Collins Injera, and Andrew Amonde forming the core of the team, and then there was the junior team, the Morans in this case with promising young players like Alvin Otieno. Two strong teams where players could rotate.

“Those players were also motivated with a lot of incentives, which made them work hard to win that tournament. A player nurtured from young will get to grips with everything and will enjoy themselves, so they do not fear these big teams.”

Abukuse has been one of the standout performers in the 2023 National Sevens Circuit
