The bankers will have to do without one of their most influential players in the next two legs of the National Sevens Circuit due to injury

KCB RFC are set to be without experienced Jacob Ojee for the next two legs of the National Sevens Circuit after sustaining an injury.

The former Shujaa captain’s absence is a blow to coach Andrew Amonde’s side as they seek to reclaim the National Sevens Circuit title with the Prinsloo Sevens scheduled for Nakuru this weekend.

KCB are second on the table with 39 points, two adrift of leaders Kabras Sugar, after two legs, having won the season-opening Dala Sevens before finishing third at Driftwood in Mombasa last month and Amonde will have to do without one of his most influential players in Nakuru as well as the Christie Sevens in Nairobi.

“We’ve got a squad of 28 and we’ve been only able to use the first 15 so most likely we’re also going to give a chance to few of the guys who have not had a chance to present what they have,” Amonde told Pulse Sports of his side’s preparations for Prinsloo Sevens.

“Jacob Ojee might not be joining us for the next two legs because of injury so we’re going to look at who is coming in to replace him and how effective they will be,” he added, regarding the situation of the payer who can play on the wing, full-back and centre.

KCB collected the maximum 22 points in Kisumu after beating Kabras Sugar 17-5 in the final but had to settle for 17 in Mombasa after falling to Menengai Oilers in the semi-final, before beating Strathmore Leos in the third-place playoff.

Amonde has pointed out the weak areas that let them down in Mombasa which he is working on before travelling to Nakuru.

“Our weakness was retention of the ball so much and how to start the game at a very high level and be able to maintain it until the second half. There are a few changes that we will be making in the squad. Some forced through injury and some to give opportunities to others to express themselves,” the former Kenya Sevens captain explained.

KCB have lost valuable experience in the last one year with Amonde retiring in July 2022 before captain Curtis Lilako also hung his boots in June this year. The club responded by signing promising talents such as Nick Okullo and playmaker Lionel Ajeliti, both from Blak Blad, and Amonde has been thrilled by what he has seen from them so far.

“They are brilliant boys from what we have seen them do and how they are coping with the new system and how they are coming into KCB. They are filling in the shoes very well so it’s a matter of giving them space to grow,” said Amonde.

KCB are favourites to win Pool C at Prinsloo Sevens, with the other teams in the group being Kenya Harlequins, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology as well as Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad.
