The three side have so far shown great form and they appear to be the teams to beat in Nakuru but there could be more upsets

Kabras Sugar, KCB and Menengai Oilers are considered favourites once again for the Prinsloo Sevens taking place in Nakuru this weekend.

Kabras finished second in the season-opening Dala Sevens leg before winning the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa while KCB won in Kusumu and followed it up with a third-place finish in the coastal city.

Oilers, meanwhile, improved from sixth place in Kisumu to second in Mombasa and given they are playing at home, they need no motivation to storm to victory, added to the fact that they are both the defending Prinsloo and National Sevens Circuit champions.

Kabras lead the standings with 49 points after the two legs with KCB second, just two adrift, while Strathmore Leos are third on 32 points, one more than Oilers.

Maximum points will therefore, be on the minds of the leading trio to put them in a good position ahead of the fourth leg, Christie Sevens in Nairobi, as the circuit gets to the halfway point.

Kabras Sugar are seeded first in Prinsloo where they are in Pool A alongside Kisumu, Homeboyz and Western Bulls while rreigning circuit and Prinsloo champions Oilers headline Pool B which also features Nondescript, hosts and city rivals Nakuru as well as the Catholic Monks.

KCB are in Pool C with Kenya Harlequin, Masinde Muliro and Blak Blad as Strathmore Leos, Mwamba, Daystar Falcons and Zetech Oaks make up Pool D.

The tournament is named after Pete Walter Prinsloo, a rugby enthusiast of South African origin who was part of the game’s revamp in Nakuru in the 1980s.

He died from diabetes complications but not before losing two limbs and facing several other complications. He had to go around in a wheelchair but this did not stop his enthusiasm and love for the game.

This year’s event is the 15th edition in honour of his efforts and following a very successful premier in October 2007, there should be a lot of fireworks as the Nakuru Athletic Club.

With five titles to their name, Mwamba are the most successful team in the tournament’s history, winning the first two editions in 2007 and 2008 before adding more titles in 2010, 2011 and 2019.

KCB are a close second on four titles. However, they are the only team at the tournament to have pulled off a three-peat, winning in 2012, 2013 and 2014 before adding their fourth title in 2017.

Homeboyz are two-time winners of the tournament, having won it in 2016 and 2018 while hosts Nakuru (2015), city rivals Oilers (2022) and Strathmore Leos (2009) round off the list of winners at the Prinsloo.
