RUGBY Kabeberi Sevens: No margin for error for Kabras Sugar & KCB with circuit title at stake

Kabras Sugar and KCB are the only two teams with a chance of lifting the National Sevens Circuit title and neither can ill afford a poor outing in the knockout stages at Kabeberi Sevens.

Circuit leaders Kabras Sugar and second-placed KCB have no margin for error if they are to clinch the National Sevens Circuit on the final day of the Kabeberi Sevens on Sunday.

The race for the overall title is going down to the wire after Kabras and KCB reached the cup quarter-finals on Saturday.

Kabras will face Menengai Oilers in the cup quarter-final, knowing a win will see them play one of Nakuru or Kenya Harlequin. However, Oilers are a tough nut to crack and should give Felix Ayange’s men plenty of problems.

Kabras, circuit leaders on 92 points, were staring at an early elimination from the cup quarters after a tentative start to their Pool C campaign, defeating Daystar Falcons 22-7 in their opening fixture and drawing 17-17 with Masinde Muliro.

A loss against Mwamba would have seen them miss out on the cup quarter-finals and the overall title but Felix Ayange’s side came good, defeating the hosts 21-10 to claim pole position and a place in the last eight alongside Mwamba.

KCB meanwhile eased through their opening two Pool D fixtures, defeating Moi University Arsonists 50-0 and the Catholic Monks 35-7 before being made to work for the 17-7 result over the Menengai Oilers. The two sides took the top positions in the pool. The Bankers will face Mwamba in the last eight, another tricky fixture for them.

If they manage to beat Mwamba, they could potentially face Strathmore Leos in the semi-finals.

Top seeds Nondescripts have Strathmore in the quarters after sailing through from Pool A by winning all three of their group matches while Kenya Harlequin will take on Nakuru RFC in the other last eight fixture.

Kabras can claim their first circuit title in six years if they simply finish the tournament ahead of KCB in the knockout stages while the Bankers can win the circuit title if they reach the cup semis and the Sugar Millers fall at the quarters.
