Weru believes Shujaa's journey back to the top will be very long, hence the need for a well-laid down plan and proper support

Former Kenya Sevens player Gibson Weru believes the new Shujaa technical bench, headed by Kevin Wambua, need a clear plan and support for them to return the team to its glory days.

Gibu, who is the Menengai Oilers coach, feels it is going to be “a long, long, journey” back to the top, hence the need for a proper structure.

Wambua was given a strong technical bench, that includes Strathmore Leos coach Louis Kisia, as his assistant, and former Shujaa captain Andrew Amonde as the strength and conditioning coach.

“I wish them all the best because those are coaches that have shown they can produce good results with their teams,“ said Weru.

“Louis has been very good with Strathmore. Kevin is an experienced coach. I think he has been given the opportunity to coach at that level. He has been an assistant coach and headed the women. I believe he is experienced enough and I wish them all the best.

“The issue is not about the technical bench but about the support they get. We need to have a clear plan on how to get  back to the top.

“If we do not get that plan right, it will be very difficult to get back to the top. We need to play in tournaments. We need to play and develop the players.”

Weru believes Kenya has enough talent which needs good support to flourish.

“What I am confident in is that we have the right crop of players. We have the players and I hope we can support them as much as we can, but it is going to be a long, long journey back to the top,” he added.

Oilers are currently taking part in the Christie Sevens in Nairobi this weekend.
