American rugby star Ilona Maher has shocked fans with a surprise career announcement.

Maher, who joined the Dancing with the Stars: Live! tour following her standout TV appearance, made the announcement on April 6, just one day after the tour’s final performance.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to retire from dance. I am a fresh-old dancer. You all know this. Um, never said was a good one, but I am a pro. I think I gotta hang up my dancing shoes," she said.

“You know, if I never have to learn another step again, I think I'll be happy. I think I will,” she added.“So I just wanted you all to hear this from me.”

“You know, I don't know what the tabloids will say tomorrow. But this is my decision. It was hard to make because I was, like, kind of up there with the best in the world, I would say at this point. But this is for me, and I thank you all for supporting that.

Fans and friends flocked to the comments section with playful disbelief.

"Say psych right now. Please," posted her DWTS partner Alan Bersten.

The official DWTS Instagram chimed in, “We are devastated.” Fellow contestant Joey Graziadei added, “I understand why, but it’s hard to accept 😔.”

Maher’s viral quote from the show—“I’ve been better Carrie Anne”—was also lovingly revived by Brylee Armstrong, wife of pro Brandon Armstrong.

Others fans could not resist the banter, suggesting, “You finished your dance journey now it’s time for Alan to start his rugby journey.”

Beyond dance and rugby, Maher has kept busy as she recently wrapped a contract with the Bristol Bears in England’s top women’s rugby league and launched a new podcast, House of Maher, alongside her sisters Olivia and Adrianna.
