The Kenya Sevens youngster was named MVP in the recently concluded Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa.
Menengai Oilers and Kenya international Denis Abukuse has discussed the responsibility of using his World Rugby Sevens Series experience to rub on to his inexperienced teammates as they attempt to retain their 2023 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit.
Abukuse made a name for himself in last season’s edition, which won him a place in Shujaa head coach Damian McGrath’s squad for the World Series in most of the legs.

Although Shujaa got relegated after a 19-year spell at the top level of World Rugby, Abukuse had a memorable debut season, pulling off impressive individual performances and growing in maturity and experience as the season went on.
Speaking to Pulse Sports, the Bungoma High School alumnus said the exposure he gained has helped him do well in this season’s circuit so far, including being named most valuable player at the recently-concluded Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa.

“The stage I played in last season built a lot of confidence in me. If I have played on that stage, the national circuit should not overwhelm me,” Abukuse said.
“I should not appear weak when I am on the pitch. If I show I am weak, the teammates who are looking up to me will feel discouraged.”

Oilers started the circuit slowly, where they finished sixth in Dala 7s after being beaten by Mwamba in the fifth-place playoff. However, they did much better in Mombasa, reaching the main cup final where they lost to Kabras Sugar RFC.

“I played in all games at the Driftwood Sevens to show the people who are coming through that I still have the energy to help them out.
“During Dala the coach was trying to blender the squad and it paid off during Driftwood 7s, where everyone was yearning to play and that why the performance was good,.We look forward to bettering it".
