The team is poised for showdown in the African Championship in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Kenya National Women’s Handball team is gearing up for the African Championships, which will run from November 27 to December 7 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Coach Victor Ochieng has credited experienced players in the squad for their pivotal role in preparing the team, particularly in mentoring the newcomers.
“The experienced players have helped us to get the newcomers settled in,” Ochieng noted via Tata Sport during a training session at Nyayo National Stadium.
“As coaches, we’ve focused on blending the team so that the young ones shed their fear of playing alongside seasoned players. Since they face them in the league every week, we are not worried about their readiness.”
The squad boasts a mix of seasoned and emerging talent.
Newcomers include Dorothy Machuma, Sara Wasike, Mercy Kirwa, and Euphresia Mukhasa from Ulinzi Sharks, Bella Dona and Lydia Juma from Daystar University, and Florence Oduor from the National Cereals and Produce Board.
Veteran players Mitchelle Adhiambo, Brenda Ariviza, Tracy Ongiri, Winnie Miyenda, Regina Waithera, and Melvin Akinyi will anchor the team.
Speaking on behalf of the regulars, Akinyi emphasised the importance of teamwork in their preparations.
“Training has been okay. We started a bit slow because we’re coming from different clubs, but the coaches have worked to gel the team over the first few days,” Akinyi said.
Kenya have been drawn into Pool A, where they will face formidable opponents, including Congo, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Cape Verde.
The team will begin their campaign against Senegal on November 27.

The championship features 12 teams, divided into two groups. Group B includes the host nation DRC, Angola, Tunisia, Guinea, Cameroon, and Uganda.
Preliminary matches will run until December 3, with the top teams advancing to the knockout stages.
