Mbugua revealed that they have assembled a team of able and dedicated young girls who will be up against teams from 11 nations.

Tennis Kenya are fully backing Team Kenya to shine at the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Group III tournament scheduled for Monday, June 12 to Saturday, June 17.

Secretary General Mbugua revealed that Tennis Kenya have assembled a team of able and dedicated young girls and they will be banking on them to deliver once they take on very tough opponents from 11 nations including Nigeria, Botswana, Burundi, and Ghana. Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, and Morocco are also in the mix.

The former tennis player revealed that they are in residential training at Nairobi Club where they play every morning and afternoon and she is sure they will ensure Kenya rises through the ranks to the Billie Jean Euro Africa Group II.

“We have a wonderful group of young girls and we know they are extremely well prepared. They have put in the hard work and we believe that this team will definitely be one of the best that we’ll ever have.

There will be competition from top players from Morocco and Tunisia but we believe that we shall be promoted because we have a solid team. The girls are very ready,” she told KTN Sport.

If Kenya manages to get promoted, Mbugua noted that it will be a great chance for the young girls to go and gain experience and at the same time, floor the tough teams to keep rising.

She cited the example of Angela Okutoyi who became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam championship at Wimbledon last year and revealed that anything is possible.

“We shall just deal with the opponents in the tough group but I believe we shall manage,” she said.

She added that having clay courts in the country is a game changer and she thanked every stakeholder who chipped in to ensure that they meet the international standards.

“We have been denied chances to host certain events due to our marram courts and having clay courts is something great. We believe this is a revolution for tennis in Kenya,” she added.
