The African table tennis champions had a smooth ride in the first round.
The African champions in the men's and women's categories, Quadri Aruna of Nigeria and Dina Meshref of Egypt, have advanced to the round of 16 of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender in Durban.
The first WTT Series Contender of the year is currently going on at the Olive Convention Center in Durban, South Africa.
The African champions are both seeded number four in the men's and women’s categories for the championship.
Aruna defeats Sun Wen
African Number one table tennis player Aruna defeated China’s Sun Wen in the first round to advance to the round of 16 of the WTT Contender in Durban.
The former German-based player won the round of 32 games 3-1 (12-10, 15-13, 13-11, 11-8).
Aruna will now go up against 16-year-old Felix Lebrun, he is ranked 73 in the world in the Round of 16. The French young star defeated Kilian Ort 3-0 in the Round of 32 to set up a date with Aruna.
Meshref defeats Yuan Wan
Dina Meshref defeated Yuan Wan 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9) to pick a place in the Round of 16.
The African champion will be going against Poland’s Natalia Bajor in the Round of 16. Bajor, who is ranked 25 in the world, defeated Yeh Yi-tian in the first round.
Meshref will be dreaming of winning her first WTT title in South Africa.
The African champion traveled to South Africa with high expectations, and could reach a record for African prize money with $75,000 in the pot for the winner.
