Malkia Strikers coach Japheth Munala and captain Triza Atuka have expressed satisfaction in their opening match against Brazil despite the defeat.

Malkia Strikers head coach Japheth Munala and captain Triza Atuuka are satisfied with their performance despite their opening match loss to Brazil at the Paris Olympic Games.

Brazil continued their dominance, claiming the win in straight sets of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-12 at the South Paris Arena. The Brazilians have been Kenya’s greatest threat and the win marks the eighth time the South American side has beaten Malkia Strikers.

Munala lauded his side for putting on a great show despite their loss. He fielded debutants Atuka, Pamela Adhiambo, Esther Mutinda, Emmaculate Nekesa, Belinda Barasa, Juliana Namutira and Veronica Adhiambo, insisting that the players tried their best to impress.

“The players tried their best especially in the first half and second sets although we didn’t go beyond 15 points. But you could see the resistance of the team both in reception and attack as well as back defense,” Munala said.

“Our main problem in Kenya and Africa in general has been the reception, but I think today (Monday) the girls received many balls well. We just failed to kill off those balls when we got them and allowed the Brazilians to capitalise on our ball. Brazilians were very fast on the net, and that gave us some problems.”

Atuka was disappointed with the result but noted that they have greatly improved in their style of play. She added that when they meet Poland in their second match, their game will certainly step up.

She added that Brazil play a fast game, something they are not used to and lauded their defense, especially their astonishing blocks.

“This is not the result that we wanted but I think we had some good moments especially with the reception which is usually for us on international scene. Our reception was quite good, we just had an issue with making the side out,” said Atuka.

“Brazil did well in their defense more so with the blocking. Despite that, we played and enjoyed each and every point we goy today. It was great to make my Olympic debut but at the same time it was quite emotional walking on that court. All the same I’m living the dream, and I just wanted to enjoy this match and psych the team regardless of the result. “

Malkia Strikers now gear up for tough matches against Poland on Wednesday before taking on Japan on August 3.
