He revealed that a record-holder athlete only receives 1000 US dollars which is equivalent to Ksh 141,300 to represent the country in events like the World Championships.

2015 World Champion Julius Yego has lamented that top sportspeople in the country are being paid peanuts and suggested that as the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reviews the salaries of top government officials, they should also look into the welfare of sports people.

In a post on his Facebook page, Yego complained that record holders are paid very little amounts of money which can hardly sustain them and it also takes a long time before they receive the money.

He revealed that a record-holder athlete only receives 1000 US dollars which is equivalent to Ksh 141,300 to represent the country in events like the World Championships.

He said: “As SRC is making some reviews on salaries of top government officials it should also make serious reviews of the allowances sports and women and paid in this country if at all since its inception they have attempted to make a review of the same!

What sportsmen and women are paid is like the fee for a term in schools in this country! For example, for a Kenyan record holder in track and field only receives 1000 dollars to represent Kenya in a world championship like the coming Budapest 2023!”

The 2016 Rio Olympics Silver medallist also lamented that the athletes who went for the 2022 Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius and brought medals back home have never been paid.

He urged the Ministry of Sports, led by Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, to look into the cases and make sure the athletes are paid.

“It’s such a shame to a country known around and celebrated in athletics to pay such to its athletes. It has also to be noted that in some championships in the calendar of athletics, some athletes have never been paid their medal rewards.

The team that represented Kenya at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius has never been paid a year later.

Salaries and Remuneration Commission please take time and review the allowance scheme for sportsmen and women in Kenya and put up a policy that these patriots deserve.”
