The four-time Olympic champion has explained how marketing changed his perspective from viewing the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight as 'stupid' to paying attention to it.

American sprint icon Michael Johnson has opened up about the power of marketing a sport even when it seems ‘irrelevant’ and how one can tweak people’s mindsets to make them view the event as a priority.

He made the comments following the successful hosting of the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight that was given the much-needed hype and it attracted interest from different people, even those who lack interest in sports.

The four-time Olympic champion explained that when he first heard about the fight, he thought about it as not sensible and hence did not give much attention to it but as time went by, he started following the updates and thought he might have been wrong but explained that great marketing skills played a huge role in his desire to follow everything.

“When this fight was first announced I thought it was stupid. Several months of hype convinced me I was wrong. I was right all along! The power of marketing and hype cannot be denied,” Michael Johnson said in a post on his X (Twitter) handle.

This comes days after the legendary quarter miler announced the venues of his Grand Slam Track League set for next year.

Michael Johnson has been very strategic in the way he made the announcements and selected the venues and from that, we can all agree that his marketing team has also done their best.

The first edition of the Slam will be the Kingston Slam, which will take place at National Stadium, in Independence Park, Kingston, Jamaica, April 4 to 6.

The second edition of the event will be the Miami Slam that will take place at Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Florida, May 2 to 4. The event will then proceed to Philadelphia and will take place at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, May 30 to June 1.

The final Slam will be held in Los Angeles at UCLA’s Drake Stadium on June 27, 28, and 29. Michael Johnson has been very strategic in avoiding clashes with the Diamond League Meetings too, making it easier for track and field fans to follow the event wholesomely.
