OLYMPICS Latest survey points to risk of empty seats at Olympic Games

With less than 200 days to go ahead of the Olympic Games, there is a risk of empty seats which might be due to the high prices of tickets.

Preparations for the Olympic Games are ramping up but there might just be more than meets the eye since approximately 55 medal sessions are yet to sell their tickets, according to a survey by City A.M.

This brings a level of uncertainty and it might be due to the ticket prices since the Olympics are one of the most lucrative events in the world. The event definitely has an aura of desirability.

Athletics tickets have been priced at €990 (Ksh 171,170) for premium “Category First” seats for evening sessions, and €690 (Ksh 119,300), €385 (Ksh 66,576), €195 (Ksh 33,720) and €85 (Ksh 14,698) for Category A-D tickets.

The event is set to begin on Friday, July 26 to Sunday, August 11 with the opening ceremony happening on the River Seine. Among the tickets available for purchase are the men’s and women’s 100m athletics finals and the men’s and women’s 200m finals at the Stade de France.

Among the other sports with medal event tickets available are rugby sevens, handball, basketball, boxing, and swimming.

Last month, World Athletics president Seb Coe had to intervene and observed that the ticket prices were lumpy. He compared the tickets at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and noted that the Worlds were way cheaper.

“In Budapest [2023 World Athletic Championship], we had very affordable tickets. There are always going to be premium tickets but it is important that our stadiums are full of people that love our sport, not people that can afford to get to an Olympics.

“Our sport cannot afford to look marginal in big championships. It really is unacceptable. And I don’t want people to think that Budapest was a one-off. This is not a one-off, it is not an outlier. This is the new standard. And full stadia are absolutely a prerequisite,” Coe said.
