Former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has explained why Kipchumba Murkomen is the right replacement to head the sports docket in Kenya.

Former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has shared why newly-appointed Sports CS Kipchumba Murkomen is the right fit for the sports docket in Kenya.

Namwamba, in an interview on the Safari za Mabingwa show with Oga Obinna, explained that he has known Murkomen for a long time and salutes him for his passion for sports.

He disclosed that if he were the one selecting the new cabinet secretaries, then he would still pick Murkomen to lead the sports docket, explaining that they have known each other for years. Namwamba added that they studied in the same university for their law post-graduate studies hence the familiarity.

“First of all, Murkomen is such a fantastic friend…we even went to the same college for our postgraduate studies. We have a long history together and if you had asked me to choose a successor, among my colleagues in Cabinet, I wouldn’t have gone beyond Murkomen,” Namwamba said.

“I would have picked Murkomen because I know his passion for sports and he is a sports person himself. He has tried to break my record at Bunge FC…I still hold the record for the highest number of goals scored and Murkomen came close but not quite. I do not doubt that Murkomen is a good fit for sports and I have no doubt that he is going to be a big success,” he added.

Meanwhile, Murkomen was nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports by President William Ruto, following a cabinet reshuffle that saw the dissolution of the previous cabinet.

The move was due to the anti-Finance Bill protests and allegations of widespread corruption and the former Senator for Elgeyo-Marakwet County found himself as the successor of Namwamba, who has held the position for the past two years.

Murkomen holds a PhD in law from the American University, Washington College of Law, and has also earned degrees from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and the University of Nairobi, where he completed his Masters and Bachelor’s degrees, respectively.
