Nigerians will go to the polls on Saturday, February 25, 2023, as they look to elect a new president for the nation. As the country looks to elect a new leader, you can make some money by betting on the outcome.
Nigeria is on the verge of electing a new president, with voters going to the polls this weekend. Like every outcome-based event, there is a probability attached to every participant, and you can make some money by betting on the winner.
The Setup
Muhammadu Buhari has spent eight years as president, thereby exhausting the two-term opportunity given to every Nigerian by the constitution. This means that regardless of the outcome of the 2023 presidential elections, Nigeria will have a new president.
There are 18 candidates vying for this position, which means there are enough options to wager on. However, of the 18 candidates, only three are quite popular and have a huge following behind them.
The leading candidates
There are three names in the race that are popular among Nigerians, and the feeling is that one of them will likely be the winner.
Bola Tinubu - All Progressives Congress (APC)
Bola Tinubu is a strong candidate in the presidential race and has made a name for himself in the Nigerian political atmosphere. He is a former governor of Lagos State, holding that position from 1999 to 2007.
He is a co-founder of the APC alongside the incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu’s running mate is Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State between 2011 and 2019.
Atiku Abubakar - Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, and running for the sixth time, is another strong candidate in the race. He finished second in the 2019 presidential polls with 11,262,978 votes (41.22%), winning in 17 of the 36 states and the capital city of Abuja. Atiku’s running mate is Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, who has served as the governor of Delta State since 2015.
Peter Obi - Labour Party (LP)
Peter Obi was considered a third force in the presidential race but has seen his stock rise along the way. Obi served as governor of Anambra State from March to November 2006, February to May 2007, and June 2007 to March 2014.
He was Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 presidential elections, as they came second in the polls. Obi’s running mate is Yusuf Baba-Ahmed, a former senator of the Zaria Federal Constituency, Kaduna State, between 2003 and 2007.
