The Sports Ministry has explained what the next phase of renovations at Kasarani Stadium will involve after closing the facility for the next one year

Kasarani Stadium has been closed again for renovations as Kenya starts preparations to get their stadia in place ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The government had initially closed the facility after opening tenders for the improvement of the stadium, alongside Nyayo and Eldoret’s Kipchoge Keino in Eldoret, in July before opening it up for events again.

Now, the Sports Ministry says the stadium will be out of bounds for one year after settling on a Chinese contractor who will conduct comprehensive refurbishment.

“This stadium is almost 40 years old, it has not undergone major rehabilitation for a long time and when the CAF inspection team visited, we agreed on a number on interventions and improvements that would upgrade this stadium to a level where it can meet the required international standards,” Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba said on Friday.

“I am pleased to announce that the contractor is ready and they will be undertaking major overhaul of this stadium. All activities of any nature will not be allowed. It will be closed while the construction goes on.”

His Principal Secretary Peter Tum emphasised the need for the contractor to do a quality job and complete it on time.

“It is expected that this contract will last for only 12 months beginning today [Friday]. We are looking at speed, quality and that we are getting stadia in this country for the first time that speaks to what football in the world requires,” said Tum.

Inspectors from Confederation of African Football (CAF) visited Kenya in July to check on the state of stadia in the country where they visited Kasarani, Nyayo and Kipchoge Keino which have been earmarked to host the tournament when Kenya stages it alongside neighbours Uganda and Tanzania.

Kasarani and Nyayo failed the last inspection test conducted by CAF in 2021 with Sports Kenya highlighting what needed improving on the facilities.

“When they did their last inspection in 2021, they flagged certain areas which need to fulfill international standards. For Kasarani, there is a minimum requirement on floodlight, there should be a lux amount of illumination and the lights have to be overhead,” an official from Sports Kenya told Pulse Sports in July.

“There must be seats in the entire stadium and the VIP area also need to have immovable seats. There must be a public address system, venue control, media centre, changing rooms need improving, the dugout, drainage, mixed zone and there should be medical facilities that will attend to not only players but spectators and VIPs.”
