Five nominees announced for Sportsman Living with Disability category at the 2023 SOYA Awards

Titus Maundu Mwonga will battle it out with four other nominees for the Sportsman Living with Disability Award at the 2023 Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

Titus Maundu Mwonga is among the top five nominees shortlisted for the 2023 Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) Sportsman Living with Disability category ahead of the annual gala scheduled for February 23 in Nairobi County.

Mwonga will battle it out with four other nominees who have also accomplished a lot in the journey of sports. The youngster made it to the list of nominees owing to his dominant exploits at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago last year.

The Kenyan bagged a silver medal after throwing 20m in the boy's discus throw. Grenadian para-athlete Tyler Smith has captured the bronze medal with South Africa's Daniel Tumiso Molobela won the Men's Discus with a gold throw of 26.34m.

Mwonga will be up against Kelvin Kipkogei who bagged two gold medals at the second edition of Africa Deaf Athletics Championships in Kasarani, Nairobi. He won gold in the men’s long jump and the men’s javelin.

John Njoroge has also been nominated thanks to his hard work that saw him being selected among the 39 athletes who will represent the country at the upcoming Paralympic Games. Para-athlete Samson Opiyo and David Ng’ang’a Ngugi have also made the cut to the coveted list.

Meanwhile, the prestigious event that fetes best sports achievers, will be marking its 20th anniversary since its inaugural edition in 2004 which saw legendary Paralympian Henry Wanyoike and athletics great Catherine Ndereba named the sportsman and sportswoman of the year respectively.
