The CS engaged in talks towards unlocking the Kenyan and Cuban agreement and working together.

Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba is a man on a mission as he burns the midnight oil to take sports in the country to the next level.

Namwamba, who is away in Cuba for the Conference of Ministers of the G77+China, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Antonio Becali, president of the Cuban National Institute of Sport, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) in a quest to develop sports in the country.

The CS engaged in talks towards unlocking the Kenyan and Cuban agreement and working together in order to revive boxing, volleyball, sprints, and field events in the country.

The MOU will see Cuba offer technical capacity-building training exchange programs for Kenyan athletes in the sports disciplines highlighted.

The program will also be keen to see Cuba send coaches who have specialised in the mentioned sports disciplines to help train the local athletes with an aim of taking Kenya's sports to the next level and will include Kenyan athletes training in Cuba before major sports championships.

In return, Kenya will also provide Cuban athletes with an opportunity to train in the country, specifically in the high-altitude camps.

The partnership will also include the continuation of sports scholarships for Kenyans in Cuba. This will be applicable in the University of Sciences of Physical Culture and Sports at the postgraduate diploma and degree levels. The main aim of the scholarship will be to strengthen the Kenya Academy of Sports.
