Paris 2024 event organisers and Chaumet, have unveiled the Olympic medals with each of the 5,084 medals produced set to include 18g of iron from the Eiffel Tower.

The 2024 Paris Olympics event organisers and Chaumet have unveiled the medal designs ahead of the games scheduled for July 26 to August 11, as well as the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.

The medals were designed by Chaumet and made by the Monnaie de Paris, each of the 5,084 medals produced will include 18g of iron from the Eiffel Tower.

“We came to Chaumet with a crazy idea. Why not include a little of the Eiffel Tower in the medals? The Chaumet team rose to the challenge and we are all very proud of the result,” said Joachim Roncin, Director of Design at Paris 2024.

As reported by Forbes, the innovative idea uses iron donated by the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, from material removed from the Tower during modernization and renovation work over the years.

The medals are also embossed with the Olympic flame and rings and a hexagonal piece of iron is set at the center of each medal, using the same techniques used for setting gemstones.

The hexagonal shape symbolizes France—known as hexagon—and the sunburst pattern is a signature Chaumet motif, seen on 1920s tiaras and 1970s bracelets in Maison’s archives.

“The Goddess Nike, the Acropolis of Athens... and the Eiffel Tower. Gold, silver or bronze, the Olympic medals of the Games of #Paris2024 will have a little bit of France in them,” Paris 2024 organisers revealed.

Benoît Verhulle, Head of Atelier at Chaumet, added that the sunburst represents shining sporting achievement, French pride at hosting the Games, and Paris as the City of Light. “When the light hits the medals, they really come alive,” he added.

Meanwhile, the backs of the Paralympic medals carry the dates of the Games in International Braille, in a nod to the French inventor of the tactile language for the visually impaired.

In the middle is a stylized view of the Eiffel Tower seen from below, an image that will be familiar to anyone who has visited. The ribbons, specially designed and woven in France, by Meyret, are inserted directly into the medals themselves for a more minimalist look.
