This has come at a critical time when Kenya is preparing to host CHAN and the CAF president Patrick Motsepe will be visiting the country on Friday.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports in Kenya has yet again faced a massive change with Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen being transferred to another department.

This has come at a critical time when Kenya is preparing to host CHAN and the Confederation of African Football president Patrick Motsepe will be visiting the country on Friday, December 20 to monitor the progress of the stadium.

CS Murkomen was appointed the Sports CS on August 8 and in less than six months, he has been moved to another department, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.

Honourable Salim Mvurya has now been appointed as the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.

Mvurya has also been affected by the changes twice as he was appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs before being appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry.

This is the third time the sports docket is facing the change as Ababu Namwamba was the first cabinet secretary before Murkomen replaced him. Murkomen came in from the Ministry of Roads and Transport.

Ababu Namwamba has now been appointed as the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON).

He now has a task to oversee the ongoing projects as Kenya prepares to host CHAN scheduled for February 1 to February 28 next year. The event will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

As CS Murkomen took office, he tried fastening the process of the construction of the Talanta Sports City and the renovation of the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani and the Nyayo National Stadium.

As things stand, Kenyans have expressed uncertainty on whether the stadiums will be ready by next year and with the reshuffling process, it might take longer.

However, Murkomen reassured that everything would be ready before time, insisting that remains optimistic that everything will be ready

“We are definitely hosting CHAN from February 1 to February 28, 2025. The schedule and team allocations are yet to be finalized, but we are burning the midnight oil to ensure our facilities are ready. Contractors have assured us they will do everything humanly possible to beat the deadline," he said.

“In hindsight, offering two stadiums was a mistake. Even Uganda and Tanzania, with CAF-qualified stadia, only offered one each. For us, Kasarani’s contract was awarded in May this year, involving a massive overhaul. The pressure since then has been immense.”
