Conor McGregor shifts focus from UFC to run for Ireland's presidency in 2025, sparking debate and support on social media.

UFC legend Conor McGregor has announced a surprising pivot from his anticipated return to the octagon, opting instead to pursue a new challenge as a candidate for the presidency of Ireland in 2025.

This shift comes amid increasing political engagement from the fighter, who has expressed a fervent desire to effect change in his home country.

The Dublin-born mixed martial arts star has been a polarizing figure, known as much for his exploits outside the ring as for his combative style within it.

McGregor's declaration aligns with his recent activities on social media platforms, where he has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the current political landscape in Ireland.

"As President, I hold the power to summon the Dáil [Ireland's government] as well as dissolve it," McGregor stated in a recent post on X.

"So as I said before, I would have all the answers the people of Ireland seek from these thieves of the working man, these disrupters of the family unit, these destructors of small businesses, and on and on and on!"

Despite having no formal political experience, McGregor believes his outsider status is an asset, echoing a sentiment that has become increasingly popular globally.

His wealth and celebrity have given him a platform that few can match, and his entry into the political arena has been met with a mixture of skepticism and curiosity.

These sentiments were echoed by controversial figure Andrew Tate, who also replied to McGregor’s post: "My grandfather is from Limerick. I have the Irish passport. I will vote for you. We must do something before it’s too late," signaling a potential influential support base for McGregor’s campaign.

McGregor's decision to forego a return to UFC fighting could be a disappointment to fans eager to see him back in action, especially after his recovery from a recent injury.

However, the fighter feels that his potential impact in the political realm could be far greater than his athletic achievements.

"I know very well. Ireland needs an active President employed wholly by the people of Ireland. It is me. I am the only logical choice. 2025 is upcoming…" he added, firmly planting his intentions to not only run but to bring about significant change.

The prospect of McGregor running for office raises numerous questions about the feasibility of a sports figure transitioning into a significant political role.

Critics argue that his lack of experience might hinder his effectiveness, while supporters believe his strong personality and public following could bring about the changes he advocates.

While the official campaign has yet to begin, McGregor's move has certainly stirred the political pot in Ireland.

With current President Michael D. Higgins expected to call an election in October next year, the coming months promise to be filled with intense discussion and debate over the nation's future leadership.

Reflecting on his upcoming campaign, McGregor concluded with a poignant remark:

"Stop the train until. The people of Ireland deserve the answers they seek. Point blank. This would be my power as President."
