China has been off to an impressive start at the Paris Olympic Games, claiming a stunning gold medal in mixed-team air rifle shooting.

China has secured the first gold medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics, but the victory took place far from the French capital.

The Olympic shooting range in Chateauroux, located a three-hour drive from Paris, was the backdrop for this historic achievement.

On Saturday morning, the Chinese duo of Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao triumphed in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event.

The 10-meter air rifle mixed team event is a precision shooting competition where pairs of athletes; one male and one female compete together.

Each shooter takes turns firing at a stationary target from a distance of 10 meters using a .177 caliber air rifle.

The goal is to hit the target as close to the center as possible, with each shot being scored based on its proximity to the bullseye.

In this event, teams accumulate points based on their individual scores, and the pair with the highest total score wins.

The format combines both individual skill and team strategy, as athletes must work together to maintain consistency and capitalize on their combined performance. The event is known for its focus on accuracy, control, and mental fortitude.

The pair displayed exceptional skill and composure, opening an early four-point lead over South Korea’s Keum Jihyeon and Park Hajun.

The Chinese team maintained their advantage throughout the competition, ultimately winning with a score of 16-12.

This victory marks China’s second consecutive gold in this event, following their triumph at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Back then, Yang Qian and Yang Haoran took home the gold as the mixed team air rifle shooting made its Olympic debut.

In the same shooting range earlier on Saturday, Kazakhstan’s Alexandra Le and Islam Satpayev secured the bronze medal.

The Kazakh team defeated Germany’s Anna Janssen and Maximilian Ulbrich with a decisive 17-5 score, becoming the first medalists of the Paris Games.

China's early success in Chateauroux sets a high standard for the rest of the Olympic competition, while Kazakhstan’s strong performance adds to the excitement as the Games continue.
