The American Football Federation Uganda (AFFU) is organizing a National Certification Course for aspiring head coaches in preparation for the inaugural high school flag football tournament.

The course will run from May 15th to May 26th, 2023, at the American Center Kampala and is expected to have over 50 participants.

According to AFFU president Stephen Okeng, the certification course will fast-track the development of the sport in Uganda.

"We have set up this exercise to enable the various coaches to get their coaching accreditation and further strengthen the sport at the youth level and lead to its long-term development," he said.

The AFFU has been visiting secondary schools to introduce the game to the students.

After the certification course, coaches who receive accreditation will be deployed to these schools to start the flag football program.

"We expect to deploy two coaches per school who will help us grow the game and provide structure to these athletes," Okeng added.

Former American Football head coach George Cornick, Uganda Football head coach Mpanga Shudais, Greg Presto, and other local coaches will oversee the certification course.

The participants will be divided into two groups and trained by these instructors.

In addition, the AFFU has announced that the inaugural secondary schools flag football championship will take place in June, although the date and location have yet to be communicated.
