Anticipation builds as Afraha Stadium grand reopening approaches after two-year overhaul
Afraha Stadium's two-year, Sh683 million renovation nears completion, with a December 2023 reopening set, following significant delays and budget increases.
“According to the Contractor Lexis Limited, the track which involved a complex process of installing various layers including spreading marram, laying of polythene sheets, steel reinforcing and concreting serves as a testament to tangible progress achieved during this phase,” the county government said via a social media post.
“While the installation of the tartan awaits the curing of the track, the project stands at an advanced stage of completion with major works having been successfully concluded.
“The transformative development once complete is poised to elevate the Nakuru City's profile, nurture sports talent and foster community engagement, promising a positive impact on both community and the sporting landscape.”
The development comes five months after Sports Kenya advised the county government to ensure the stadium has a pitch and running track that meet international standards.
“While the team identified areas that require urgent attention, they also provided valuable recommendations for improvements. This includes the need for additional work on the pitch and running track to meet international standards and the use of high-quality turf and an advanced irrigation system,” the county government said following Sports Kenya’s visit to the facility last August.
Afraha Stadium closed nearly three years ago with the aim of giving it a new face at the tune of Ksh650 million but work has taken longer than expected with Nakuru governor Susan Kihika speeding up the process in 2023.
The county government will seek to complete the facility early this year which will be a boost to sports not just in Nakuru but in the country, given Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia are set to undergo major renovations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
