WRC promoter has extended the Acropolis Rally Greece securing its place in the WRC calendar with historic changes.

WRC Promoter has solidified the future of the Acropolis Rally Greece by signing a significant two-year extension, ensuring the event’s presence in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar until at least 2027.

This landmark agreement, celebrated during an exclusive launch dinner at the Tennis Club of Athens on Thursday (June 27), was attended by prominent figures and long-term supporters of the rally, including Greek Sports Minister Yiannis Vroutsis and his predecessor Lefteris Avgenakis.

The Acropolis Rally, which has seen three successful years under its current format, will continue to be based in Lamia.

In a nod to tradition, the rally will commence from Athens and return to its historic June date in 2025.

The last Greek WRC round held in June was in 2013, with recent rallies taking place in September.

As a founding member of the WRC’s inaugural season in 1973, the Acropolis Rally is one of the championship’s most historically and strategically significant events.

It features legendary mountain stages such as Elatia, Bauxites, and Tarzan, renowned as some of the most challenging in the sport since the seventies.

“We are thrilled to extend our partnership with the EKO Acropolis Rally Greece,” expressed WRC Promoter Managing Director Jona Siebel.

“This rally is a cornerstone of our championship and a favorite among our global fanbase and competitors alike.

“None of this would be possible without the support from Prime Minister Mitsotakis since day one. I must also acknowledge the invaluable contributions from Lefteris Avgenakis in the past and Yiannis Vroutsis now.

Their understanding of the positive impact that bringing the WRC to Greece creates has been instrumental, and we look forward to continuing this journey in 2026 and 2027."

The event's importance to the WRC calendar cannot be overstated.

The Acropolis Rally’s challenging stages test the mettle of the world’s best drivers and provide breathtaking spectacles for fans.

The rally’s return to its June slot is particularly exciting for fans and competitors who have long cherished the summer spectacle.

This change is expected to boost tourism and provide a mid-season highlight in the WRC calendar.
