Irish rally legend John Coyne exits East African Safari Classic Rally, replaced by co-driver, aiming to conquer unforeseen challenges.

Irish rally legend John Coyne has been compelled to withdraw from the prestigious East African Safari Classic Rally on medical grounds.

Coyne, renowned for his exceptional driving skills, had been behind the wheel of a meticulously prepared Tuthill Porsche 911, with Josh McErlean as his navigator.

Coyne, expressing his disappointment, stated, "Sadly I’ve had to pull out of the East African Safari Classic Rally this morning due to an inner ear/balance problem."

Under the rally regulations, it is permitted to replace a crew member on medical grounds. Therefore, Eoin Treacy has stepped in to co-drive for Josh McErlean Rallying for the remainder of the event.

The duo's journey in the rally had started on a high note as they claimed victory in the prologue, covering a remarkable 15.5-kilometer stretch.

Their performance outpaced the 2019 champion, Kris Rosenberger, by a notable 8 seconds, setting the stage for an exciting Day 1.

John Coyne has been a globetrotter over the past 11 months, with his involvement in the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy taking him to various corners of the world.

He had previously teamed up with fellow Irishman Eoin Treacy at events like Guanajuato Mexico in March and Secto Rally Finland in August.

Before arriving in Kenya for the East African Safari Classic Rally, Coyne had expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "It has been on my bucket list for a long time – I am really looking forward to it.

I am really excited to finally get the chance to do this iconic rally. It will be a real challenge, and I hope that my 73-year-old body can keep up with the determined youngster who lives in my head! It will be a lot of fun, for sure."

Eoin Treacy, his replacement co-driver, brings a wealth of experience to the team, having competed in the FIA World Rally Championship.

Their version of the iconic German car, the Tuthill Porsche 911, is among the twelve examples featured in the rally, alongside other classics such as Opel Ascona 400s, Datsun Violets, Toyota Levins, Ford Escorts, and even a Mercedes-Benz.

Coyne's withdrawal has undoubtedly left a void in the rally, given his remarkable driving prowess and the promising start he and McErlean had enjoyed.

However, the decision to prioritize his health and well-being is commendable, and the substitution with Eoin Treacy ensures that the team continues to compete at its best.

The East African Safari Classic Rally is known for its challenging terrain and demanding stages, making it a true test of both man and machine.

John Coyne's presence had added a touch of glamour to the event, given his illustrious career and accomplishments in the world of rally racing. Despite the setback, fans can still expect thrilling competition as the rally progresses.

As the rally continues its course through East Africa's picturesque landscapes, the spotlight will now shift to Josh McErlean and Eoin Treacy, who will be determined to honor Coyne's legacy by delivering an impressive performance in the Tuthill Porsche 911.
