Kalle Rovanperä praises Takamoto Katsuta’s stunning Rally Sweden performance, believing his first WRC victory could come at Safari Rally Kenya.

Two-time WRC champion Kalle Rovanpera has lavished praise on team-mate Takamoto Katsuta after the Japanese driver came heartbreakingly close to his maiden FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) victory at Rally Sweden.

Katsuta delivered a stunning performance on the snow-covered stages of Umeå, finishing just 3.8 seconds behind winner Elfyn Evans in another GR Yaris Rally1.

The near-miss was agonizing, but it cemented Katsuta’s status as a genuine contender at the highest level of rallying.

“I was really proud of Taka,” Rovanpera said.

“I was hoping he was going to get his first win, but at the same time, I’m really happy Elfyn brought it home with really good points for the team from those guys.

“But Taka has been doing such a good job. You can see how everything is working for him - the car is flowing, and he’s taking some very good confidence. He’s stronger in the mindset and in the approach now. He knows how to keep the pace and the consistency. I hope he will take the first win soon.”

Katsuta has been steadily improving since joining Toyota’s top-flight rally squad, and his recent performance in Sweden was a testament to his growing confidence.

The 30-year-old has long been known for his raw speed, but his ability to maintain consistent pace throughout an entire rally has been a work in progress.

The Finnish superstar Rovanperä, who is sitting out a full WRC campaign this season, believes Katsuta’s breakthrough victory is inevitable.

“Taka is showing now that he can be fast on different surfaces,” Rovanpera continued.

“He has always been quick, but now he’s also smarter in the way he manages a rally. That’s what you need to win.”

The timing couldn’t be better for Katsuta to finally reach the top step of the podium.

The next round of the WRC is the grueling Safari Rally Kenya (20-23 March), an event where he has already proven his prowess.

Katsuta has secured three podium finishes in just four starts in Africa, making him one of the most consistent performers in the modern era of the event.

If Katsuta can build on his Swedish form and navigate the punishing African stages with the same determination, his long-awaited first win could be just around the corner.
