Drama in Kenya Motorsports Sports Federation as factions tussle over power

The Kenya Motorsports Federation has been thrown into turmoil following the recent leadership standoff.

Leadership wrangles have caused an uproar in Kenya Motorsports Federation between incoming interim chairman Jim Kahumbura and the outgoing interim chairman Maina Muturi.

Mr Kahumbura was announced as the head of the KMSF after a Board of Directors meeting held on Wednesday, September 28 at the Sikh Union Club.

Kahumbura previously served in a similar capacity a few years back and has replaced Muturi who served as chairman since August last year. In 2023, Muturi returned to KMSF 14 years after his last call of duty in the same position.

In a statement, Kahumbura will serve on an Interim basis while Rohit Budhia takes over as the interim Motor Sport Council Chairman until the next Annual General Meeting which is scheduled to take place on 9th October. Budhia takes over from Sukhdev Chaggar who left the council.

“The Board of Directors appointed Mr. Jim Kahumbura as the interim Chairman of the Kenya Motor Sports Federation Limited until the next Annual General Meeting. The Board appointed Mr. Rohit Budhia as the interim Motor Sport Council Chairman,” a part of the statement read.

The board noted that the KMSF-appointed Appeals Board overreached its mandate in the Appeal before them and declared the purported decisions of the Appeals Board Ultra Vires, adding that the Appeals Board had no mandate to amend the National Competition Rules, the decision of the Championship Steward was confirmed, and no points will be awarded due to ineligibility of the competitors in the class subject to the Appeal.

Meanwhile, the outgoing chairman Muturi has insisted that he is still the chairman and announced that the press release earlier released was not signed.

“The KMSF Board would like to clarify as follows: The meeting held today at the Sikh Union Club was not a bona fide KMSF Board and it did not meet the threshold of the meeting where Mr Jim Kahumbura threw out the Company Secretaries and subsequently some of the Directors walked out in protest,” the statement read.

“The Chairman of KMSF remains to be Mr. Maina Muturi. Changes to the Motorsport Council and to the KMSF Appeals Board can only be carried out by the KMSF Board. There have been no changes to those Councils or Boards. A proper constituted Board Meeting and the AGM will be announced in due course.”
