Ongare was the first Kenyan to successfully pass the preliminary round after her win over Tanzania’s Rahma Maganga.
2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Christine Ongare is optimistic of displaying better results after successfully making the cut at the ongoing IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India.
Ongare was the first Kenyan to successfully pass the preliminary round after her win over Tanzania’s Rahma Maganga.
“I have the faith and belief that I am going to do better in the next round. I believe it’s through my hard work that I am able to post this result,” Ongare said.
In the previous matches, Kenyan pugilists displayed poor runs that saw them lose to their opponents. Amina Martha lost 1-4 to Venezuela’s Gomez Landaeta and debutant Pauline Chege also lost 5-0 to Guatemala’s Reyes Moreno.
Similarly, Ann Wanjiru lost to Bagao Helena of Mozambique by the same margin. Lucy Ayoma also lost 1-4 to Moldova’s Chiper Cristina. Olympian Elizabeth Akinyi also lost 0-5 to Taipei’s Lin Chein Yu.
The latest shock came as Friza Anyango lost to Algeria’s Khelif Imane. Anyango, however, also lamented that the coach officiating her match was not fair.
Speaking on KBC, she noted that the whistle was blown a few minutes into the match and she couldn’t comprehend why.
“I’m disappointed and heartbroken because the referee has stopped the game and I don’t know why,” she said.
Head Coach Benjamin Musa also reiterated what Anyango had said noting that the officiating was unfair and efforts for him to complain just disappeared into thin air.
