Zico has hinted at a possible return for Benson Omala to Gor Mahia following tulmtuous last five months since moving to Lebanon.
Gor Mahia head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has hinted at the possibility of re-signing Kenyan international Benson Omala, whose career has been disrupted by instability in Lebanon.
The 21-year-old striker left Gor Mahia for Lebanese side Al Safa in August, but ongoing challenges have cast doubt on his future with the club.
Omala’s stint in Lebanon has been marred by the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, which has halted football activities and made the region unsafe. The striker, who returned to Nairobi in August for Harambee Stars duties, opted not to go back to Al Safa after the club delayed paying his sign-on fees.
Although a resolution was reached between Omala and Al Safa, the worsening conflict in Lebanon deterred his return. Despite the club resuming training sessions, Omala remains in Kenya, waiting for a stable environment to resume competitive football.
Coach Zico expressed enthusiasm for the prolific forward’s potential return, emphasizing Omala’s value to the team.“No team would not want to have Omala in his team. No coach would not want to have Omala in his team. If he is available, the door is always open at Gor Mahia,” Zico remarked after their 3-0 victory over Ulinzi Stars.
Omala’s goal-scoring prowess has been instrumental for Gor Mahia, with the striker netting 19 goals last season and an impressive 26 during the 2022-2023 campaign.
Gor Mahia vice chairman Francis Wasuna revealed that discussions with Omala are ongoing, with the club keen to secure his services during the mid-season transfer window.“There is strong interest in his services. We parted ways with him in a very courteous way, and that is why we are opening the door for him to return,” Wasuna told Mozzart Sport.

'I was threatened at gunpoint'- AFC Leopards' Clifton Miheso reflects on nightmare stint with South Africa's Golden Arrows
Miheso has advised fellow footballers to carefully read and understand their contracts after opening up on his nightmare spell at South African club Golden Arrows, where one of the club's officials threatened him 'at gunpoint' amidst a negotiation dispute.
Sympathizing with Omala’s predicament, Wasuna added: “We hope to have the deal completed in the mid-season window. Factors beyond his control have denied him the opportunity to play, and we want to support him through this challenging time.”
Omala’s potential return could significantly bolster Gor Mahia’s attack as they look to retain their FKF Premier League title. With the January transfer window fast approaching, all eyes will be on whether the record league winners can finalize the deal and reintegrate their star forward.
