Tanzanians had no kind words for Kenya after Taifa Stars secured qualification for next year’s AFCON tournament in the Ivory Coast
Tanzanian fans took to social media to aim subtle digs at Kenya after Taifa Stars qualified for the delayed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Tanzania secured the draw they needed to book their ticket to next year’s tournament in the Ivory Coast following a goalless stalemate with Algeria in Annaba on Thursday night.

However, as he valiantly polished off his fifteenth egg, the unthinkable occurred. Kapkeno dramatically collapsed, leaving those around him initially believing it was an elaborate stunt.
It was a memorable result for Adel Amrouche’s men who returned to the tournament for the first time since 2019, making it the third time they have qualified for the AFCON, having made their maiden appearance in 1980.
With Kenya not even involved in the qualifiers, having been kicked out following their FIFA ban in February 2022, while Uganda failed to seal their place after finishing third in Group F, Tanzanians are so far the only East African team to have made it through and they had a go at their rivals.
“Tanzania seals qualification to 2023 AFCON finals in Ivory Coast and will be the only CECAFA representative. Uganda with a meaningless victory over Niger will watch AFCON on TV alongside neighbours Kenya,” said one fan.
“Simba SC and Young Africans from Tanzania making East Africa proud at club level in CAF competitions and now Tanzania national team is destined to do so for CECAFA,” added another.
“The only CECAFA team to play in the next AFCON in Ivory Coast. Time to agree that Tanzania football has developed more than other members of CECAFA?” posed a Taifa Stars supporter.
“Hey Kenyans and Ugandans, this is Taifa Stars Tanzania team, not France or Brazil Sawa (okay)?” was another salvo fired Kenya and Uganda’s way.
However, others feel Tanzania may have qualified but stand no chance at the continental tournament.

ATHLETICS: Heartbreak for Mary Moraa as she pulls out of Brussels Diamond League
Moraa would be competing in the 400m in the Belgian capital with the hope of bagging her first Diamond League title in the category.
“Tanzania qualify for AFCON (only third time in their history beating Uganda to it). Congratulations! The real challenge in Ivory Coast awaits where you will be eliminated in the first round, scoring 0 goals,” responded a fan.
Tanzania might be joined by Burundi and Sudan from the East Africa region as the two sides are still in with a chance if they win their final group matches.
