Guardiola impression? Super Eagles icon Kanu's sleeping giants hit 9 games without win
Nwankwo Kanu's Enyimba are doing their best impression of Pep Guardiola and Manchester City in the Football League after the latest dropped points.
Despite the club's efforts to turn their fortunes around by sacking their youngest coach, Yemi Olanrewaju, and bringing in former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye, Enyimba struggled to find the back of the net.
In their final match of the year, which was also the first under new coach Stanley Eguma, the team failed to capitalise on home advantage.
Veteran forward, Ideye, making his debut as a substitute, had a golden opportunity to secure a win but missed the chance, reflecting the ongoing scoring woes of the team.
Following this latest draw—marking their eighth in a dismal run—fans took to social media to voice their frustrations.
Many expressed that the issues at Enyimba were deeper than just coaching changes.
One fan stated, “The coach wasn’t the problem like I said the day he was sacked,” while another added, “This crop of players Kanu brought will kill the club. Wipe them away and salvage the club.”
A third fan noted, “The calibre of players Enyimba have is lacking; only 3 or 4 players have what it takes to play for Enyimba.”
Another lamented, “Very unfortunate where we find ourselves; nothing is working at Enyimba anymore.” This fan was more direct; "Enyimba FC players are average and also Kanu Nwankwo know nothing about managing a team like Enyimba."
Despite the draw, Enyimba managed to move two places up the league table from 11th to 9th, now sitting on 24 points.
As they look ahead, Eguma will shift focus to the CAF Confederation Cup this weekend when they host Black Bulls Maputo, who previously defeated them 3-0 in the first leg.
